SAILADAY OK provides therapeutic activity for people recovering from drug and alcohol addictions. Addiction goes hand in hand with poverty of aspiration and feeds on low self-worth. This organisation deals with clients who have not felt good about themselves for a long time due to addiction problems. SAILADAY OK aims to give their clients back their self-esteem through sailing, which takes place aboard a cruising yacht in the South West Cornwall (nearest port Falmouth), sailing for between one and five days duration.
This healthy, physical, self-esteem enhancing and enjoyable pursuit offers participants the opportunity to increase personal awareness and physical competence; to practice communication skills and self assertiveness and to engage in team work whilst learning sailing and navigation skills.
Clients are charged £10.00-£20.00 to take part in the voyage, the fee varies depending on the client's circumstances. To take one client out on a voyage costs the charity about £100.00. The organisation feels that when a fee is charged the clients often make more effort and are making a positive contribution towards their health.
Many clients have already been involved in water sports, fishing or sailing and others have found themselves a new career based around the water.
The Cornwall Community Foundation has been able to help with funding towards boat leasing, fuel, anchorage, provisions, a professional skipper, a qualified therapist, insurance, supervision, postage, stationary, printing, advertising, telephone, internet and travel costs and accountancy, through the Grassroots Grants and Sport Relief programmes.
