St. Breward Institute and War Memorial Hall has benefitted from grants from the Grassroots and the Cornwall 100 Club funding programmes, firstly to replace two large windows in the lower room of the hall with modern energy efficient double glazed units. The single glazed wooden windows were installed in 1923 and are now considered beyond economic repair.

They also needed to replace the four windows in the reading room of the hall. These windows are the original (1909) single glazed windows. The hall is used by many groups for various activities and replacing the windows will make the hall a more comfortable venue for use by the isolated rural community.

"Windows - what can I say, we have been awarded some £4000.00 to replace windows in our Community Hall.
Those few words do not convey just what a difference new windows have made to our much loved little Hall -The St Breward Institute and War Memorial Hall. We have so far replaced four, 100 year old single glazed sash windows with spanking new double glazed units.
These new windows are in the Upper Room of the Hall which is used regularly by some of the many Groups in the village; Parish Council, Community Bus Association, Women's Institute, Carnival Committee, Art Group, Gardening Club and not forgotting the 'foot lady' as the Chirropidist Clinic is known. The room is so much more comfortable and we are looking forward to a reduction in our astromical electricity bills.

Later in January the two very large windows in the Lower Room are to be replaced, this will help the Committee to make make this room ready to be used to contain the History/Archive material of St Breward. A newly formed History Group will work in the Lower Room and parishioners will be able to access all the papers and photographs that are currently in storage.
A long term aim is to open the Hall one afternoon a week, possibly Easter-late Oct, encouraging visitors to the area to see small exhibitions on the varied life and history of our moorland village.

The staff at The Orchard are always extremely helpful and and the forms for 'Grassroots' and '100 Club' grants cannot be more user friendly.

We have sent photos of the new windows to Donna and Kirsty with our follow up report, they are just boring photos of windows but to us they are really exciting photos."
