Flow Through
Monies which are given to us to distribute as grants are called ‘flow through’ funds, which are used for immediate effect (often spent within one year). Income earned on endowment funds are also usually treated as flow through. Examples of flow through funds include Benefitting Older People (BOP), Crisis, and Lord & Lady St Levan.
Endowment Funds
Monies which are given as ‘endowments’ are initially invested for the longer term. They will earn income on the investment, which can either be fed into the flow through fund for immediate spending, or ploughed back into the endowment to build the capital value. As this is a long term strategy, there is no immediate grant making.
So, a donor can either have a flow through or endowment fund, or a combination of both.
We aim to be flexible and make recommendations to significant donors about how we can meet their needs and make the best use of their donations.
