Goonhilly Wind Farm Community Fund helps Zelda School to create outdoor classroom
24 January 2014
The school requested funding to build a large covered outdoor classroom so that outdoor learning would not be hampered by wet weather. Zelda School has doubled pupil numbers this year and the previous covered areas were no longer adequate.
The school received £2,500 and a frame was made from locally sourced wood by a local carpenter. A canvas roof was made by a local canvas worker, furniture and other resources were sourced locally. The new outdoor classroom has provided a fantastic new space at Zelda School. Every morning the children arrive at school and play in the outside area. The new classroom has allowed them to set up opportunities for learning that they could not have done otherwise. The parents and the children are very pleased with this addition to the school and the children often ask 'Can we take our work to the outside classroom'.
Since opening, Zelda School has been full with a waiting list. At their half-termly prospective parent days they are visited by on average five new families each time, reinforcing the need for an alternative educational option for early years provision.
Operator REG Windpower donates £48,000 a year to support good causes in the community. The Cornwall Community Foundation administers the fund, and a panel of local people decides twice a year which applications are most deserving of support.
