Award winning project that visits schools to tell of the dangers of smoking.
The Liskeard and South East Cornwall Breathers Group provides support, information exchange and social activities for people who suffer from heart and lung problems. It also raises awareness of these problems brought on by smoking, by giving talks in schools and colleges across Cornwall.
Joe Barr, one of the founding members says his health problems were caused by smoking: “In my generation everybody smoked. We were told it was good for you but we now know differently.” “Our group is sharing our experiences with other young people and we need to carry on doing what we are doing for the benefit of all.”
There are now six groups in South East Cornwall that visit schools and have between them spoken to more than 9,500 young people so far. This year the Liskeard & South East Cornwall breathers Club won the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
Talking about the support the group has had from the CCF, Joe Barr says: “We couldn’t have done it alone. They are stars in my eyes. They are there with advice and support in every aspect and every step of the way. Their doors are always open.”
