Business Club supports mentoring project
20 November 2014
The Helston Phoenix Mentoring Project received £3,000 funding from the Cornwall Community Foundation’s business arm towards funding of a series of Life Skills activities run by the Mentoring Project over 12 weeks. C100 members Eric Nicholls from Spiral Construction Ltd and Martin Bywaters from PFS (Helston) Ltd visited the project in Helston.
Helston Phoenix Mentoring Project provides mentoring programmes in the interest of social welfare. They maintain a safe and supportive environment to help young people make informed choices that will improve the conditions of their life; choose not to use illegal drugs and stay safe from crime and antisocial behaviour. The representatives of the business club met Karen Harvey, Project Coordinator Keith Stringer MBE, Helston Fire Station Manager and students from the Helston Phoenix team.
They received funding from the Cornwall 100 Club for a series of problem solving activities that will provide the young people of Helston and the wider community with opportunities for continuous development, communication skills and promote community spirit. The mentoring team will provide these activities, some of which are based on the discipline of Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service formal drills. Fire safety tutorials teach the young people skills to pass on to their families and wider family networks. All their activities promote cooperation, communication, self-confidence and competence. Their life skills course incorporates Heart Start CPR training, first aid, employability; interview skills and techniques for help with job or university interviews.
Eric Nicholls, Managing Director of Helston based C100 member Spiral Construction Ltd said "As part of the C100 Club we are delighted to support the Helston Phoenix Mentoring Project and help it in the invaluable work it does with young people in the local community, we hope it continues to grow and continue with its valuable work."
Karen Harvey said “I would like to say a heartfelt thank you on behalf of the Helston Phoenix Mentoring Project team, to the Cornwall Community Foundation for supporting our project. When I was told that the Cornwall 100 Club had awarded us £3,000, we were delighted. We were thrilled that two of their members agreed to come to the station to meet some of our young people and present them with a cheque. The Helston Phoenix Project prides itself on being unique, our young people take part in projects run by our team, and they learn skills for life. We believe in our young people, and we aim to raise their self-esteem, confidence and aspirations. A number of our young people return as mentors to pass on the skills that they have learnt. We are fully supported by our team of volunteers who help us provide free extracurricular activities after school and holiday projects during school holidays for young people who live locally and rurally. A grateful and heartfelt thank you to the CCF and the Cornwall 100 Club.”Back
